Our Mission

Rebuild Local News is the leading nonpartisan, nonprofit coalition developing and advancing effective public policies designed to strengthen community news and information.

Our broad-based organization brings together the largest alliance of local publishers, labor unions, civic organizations and newsrooms representing both rural and urban communities. Together, these 50 organizations represent over 3,000 newsrooms and 15,000 journalists working together to revive local news. The coalition also includes nonprofit and philanthropic organizations pushing to create a better, more inclusive local news system than has ever existed before.

We believe that while public policy is not the only piece of the puzzle, it can and must play a crucial role. Such policies should be crafted to be First Amendment–friendly and designed with a clear focus on safeguarding editorial independence, ensuring the local news landscape can provide communities with the robust, reliable information they need to stay informed and engaged.

Policy effort to help local news Should be:

  • Content-neutral, nonpartisan, and ensure editorial independence.
  • Future-friendly, potentially helping both existing local players and innovators.
  • Platform-neutral.
  • Helping local news organizations develop sustainable models.
  • Especially help community grounded media including diverse, nonprofit and family-owned news organizations.
  • Resulting in communities have more local reporters.
