Rebuild Local News Proud to Serve as Founding Partner of Inaugural Local News Day

A national day of action celebrating the essential role local news plays in communities across the country

Rebuild Local News is proud to serve as a founding partner of the inaugural Local News Day on April 9, 2026. This national day of action is a coordinated movement to reconnect communities with the trusted local news that keeps people informed, engaged and connected.

“The collapse of local news is one of the most widespread civic challenges of our time – national in scale and deeply local in impact,” said Steven Waldman, president of Rebuild Local News. “Local News Day is a long‑overdue moment of national recognition and an important acknowledgment of this crisis. We’re honored to stand with more than a thousand newsrooms and civic partners working to ensure communities have the reliable information they depend on.”

Our work centers on developing and advancing effective, First Amendment–friendly public policies that strengthen community news and information. We pursue this mission because our vision is clear: a more sustainable local news ecosystem where every resident, in every community, has access to reliable reporting that supports civic participation and everyday decision‑making.

As a founding partner, Rebuild Local News looks forward to joining local newsrooms, civic organizations, community leaders and media advocates across the country in marking this day and championing a future where communities are stronger, more informed and supported by thriving local newsrooms.

On April 9, Rebuild Local News and the Online News Association will co-host “2026 State Policy Playbook for Newsrooms,” a Local News Day activation event offering newsroom leaders and journalists a clear, practical overview of emerging policy models along with guidance on how to effectively engage policymakers.
